Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about NOTAM Viewer
General Questions
What is NOTAM Viewer?
NOTAM Viewer is a free web application and mobile app that allows pilots, dispatchers, and aviation professionals to search and view Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) from the FAA and aviation authorities worldwide. It provides an easy-to-use interface with smart parsing and filtering capabilities.
What is a NOTAM?
A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is a notice distributed by aviation authorities containing information about the establishment, condition, or change in any aeronautical facility, service, procedure, or hazard. This information is essential for flight operations and safety.
Is NOTAM Viewer free to use?
Yes! NOTAM Viewer is completely free to use. Both the web application and mobile app are free with optional ads. There are no subscriptions, hidden fees, or premium tiers.
Do I need to create an account?
No account is required. You can start searching NOTAMs immediately without any registration or login.
Using NOTAM Viewer
How do I search for NOTAMs?
Simply enter a 4-letter ICAO airport code (e.g., KJFK, GMMM, EGLL) in the search box. As you type, autocomplete suggestions will appear. Select an airport or press Enter to view NOTAMs.
What is an ICAO code?
An ICAO code is a 4-letter code assigned by the International Civil Aviation Organization to identify airports and FIRs worldwide. Examples: KJFK (New York JFK), EGLL (London Heathrow), GMMM (Casablanca FIR).
Can I search by airport name?
Yes! Start typing the airport name in the search box and autocomplete will show matching airports. For example, type "London" to see all London airports.
How do I filter NOTAMs?
After searching for an airport, use the content filter box to search within NOTAMs. Type keywords like "RWY" (runway), "TWY" (taxiway), or "ILS" to filter results instantly.
How do I expand or collapse NOTAMs?
Click on any NOTAM card to expand/collapse it individually. Use the "Expand All" or "Collapse All" buttons in the toolbar to control all NOTAMs at once.
What does the raw NOTAM text show?
Click "Show Raw NOTAM" to view the original, unformatted NOTAM text exactly as received from the FAA. This is useful for verification or copying the exact text.
Understanding NOTAMs
What do the NOTAM field codes mean?
Q) - NOTAM qualifier codes and classification
A) - Location: ICAO aerodrome code
B) - Start: Effective date and time (UTC)
C) - End: Expiry date and time (UTC)
D) - Schedule: Daily or recurring schedule
E) - Description: Detailed NOTAM text
F) - Lower limit: Altitude lower boundary
G) - Upper limit: Altitude upper boundary
What time zone are NOTAMs in?
All NOTAM times are in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), also known as Zulu time. Make sure to convert to your local time when necessary.
What does "FIR" mean?
FIR stands for Flight Information Region - a specified airspace region where flight information service and alerting service are provided. FIR NOTAMs apply to a larger airspace area rather than a specific airport.
Why do some NOTAMs show a warning?
A warning appears when a NOTAM doesn't follow standard ICAO format. This typically happens with domestic US NOTAMs. The raw text is always available, and we do our best to extract key information.
Data & Accuracy
Where does the NOTAM data come from?
All NOTAM data comes directly from the official FAA NOTAM Search API (notams.aim.faa.gov). We display publicly available data in real-time.
How often is the data updated?
NOTAM data is fetched in real-time every time you search. Click the "Refresh" button to get the latest NOTAMs for your selected airport.
Can I rely on this for flight planning?
Important: While we display official data, NOTAM Viewer is for informational purposes only. Always verify NOTAMs through official channels and approved flight planning services before flight operations. See our disclaimer for details.
Why don't I see NOTAMs for some airports?
This could mean: (1) There are no active NOTAMs for that location, (2) The ICAO code is incorrect, (3) The airport may not be in the FAA database, or (4) There's a temporary API issue. Try searching for a nearby major airport or FIR.
Mobile App
Is there a mobile app?
Yes! NOTAM Viewer is available as a native Android app on Google Play Store. The app offers the same features as the web version with offline filtering and a mobile-optimized interface. Download it here.
Is there an iOS app?
Currently, NOTAM Viewer is available on Android only. However, the web version works perfectly on iPhone and iPad through Safari or any mobile browser.
Can I use the web version on mobile?
Absolutely! The web version is fully responsive and works great on smartphones and tablets. Simply visit notams.gt.tc in your mobile browser.
Technical Questions
What browsers are supported?
NOTAM Viewer works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera. We recommend using the latest version for the best experience.
Does it work offline?
The content filtering feature works offline once NOTAMs are loaded. However, you need an internet connection to search and fetch NOTAMs from the FAA API.
What is dark mode?
Dark mode changes the color scheme to darker tones, which is easier on the eyes in low-light conditions. Click the moon/sun icon in the header to toggle between light and dark modes.
Do you collect my data?
We do not collect personal information. Your searches are processed locally and not stored on our servers. We use Google AdSense which may collect anonymous data for advertising. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
